Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 2025: The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning.

Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering, and health.

This unique kind of Canadian Government Scholarship in Canada has an exclusive method of application and selection. The institutes in Canada are granted Vanier’s CGS quota under this scholarship.

Applicants must apply to the university and inform their willingness to attain a Vanier Canadian Government grant for the Ph.D. program. All selected candidates for this Vanier scholarship in Canada are nominated by the institutions.

The Vanier CGS scholarships in Canada are administered by Canadian Government agencies: the Canadian Institute of Health Research, the National Science and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Vanier scholars receive a $50,000 grant each year for three years. The program accommodates and supports up to 166 scholars annually. In return, these scholars and world-class bright minds help create an effective and innovative environment in Canadian universities, especially in Canada as a whole.

Eligibility Criteria of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 2025:

  • The applicant must be a Canadian or foreign student studying in Canada.
  • The applicant must be pursuing a Ph.D. program and must be a full-time student at a Canadian institution.
  • The candidate must be nominated by a university that receives the Vanier CGS quota. (The list will be updated on July 1)
  • The applicant must be pursuing their first Ph.D. program.
  • The applicant must not be receiving any fellowship or scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC for any other doctoral program.
  • The candidate must have a first-class average in the last two years of studies.
  • Students pursuing joint professional degree programs (MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) are eligible, but only Ph.D. tenure will be funded.
  • The candidates must have a significant research component in the research proposal.
  • The applicant must not be a faculty member at the institution with a Vanier quota or any other institution. The applicant must be granted leave for the Ph.D. program from the institution.
  • The applicant must be a full-time student. If the student has a disability or has to support their family, they can be enrolled as a part-time student.
  • For part-time students, two months of study will be considered equivalent to one month for a full-time student.
  • Canadian Federal Government employees can be eligible if they take unpaid leave from the government.
  • Eligible candidates can apply for both Vanier and agency-specific Ph.D. scholarships. However, if selected for more than one scholarship, they must choose one grant.

How to Apply for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 2025:

  1. The applicant cannot directly apply to Vanier Scholarships 2024.
  2. Candidates must first apply to an institution that has the Vanier CGS quota.
  3. Applicants must be nominated by the institution for the scholarship.
  4. Applications must be submitted before the institution’s internal submission deadlines. Each institution has a different internal submission date.
  5. The nominating institution then sends the nominations to the Vanier CGS program before the closing date.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Application Process:

  1. Candidates must begin by researching Canadian institutions through the universities’ Canada websites.
  2. Ensure the selected institution has a Vanier CGS quota.
  3. Complete the application on the ResearchNet application form. Follow all required steps for the Vanier CGS application in the ResearchNet form.
  4. The application can be in English or French.
  5. Follow the presentation standards for the attached documents.
  6. Complete all mandatory tasks.
  7. Ensure the application status is complete before submission.
  8. If the institution returns the application on ResearchNet, it will return with a revised date. You can edit and re-submit it.
  9. If selected for nomination, you will receive an automated email and acknowledgment on ResearchNet.
  10. If you do not receive an email, contact the institution for the status of your application.

Required Documents for the Vanier CGS 2025:

  • ResearchNet application form.
  • Two reference letters.
  • CV/Resume.
  • Research contributions (not more than one page).
  • Personal statement depicting leadership qualities.
  • Two leadership reference letters.
  • Research proposal (maximum of two pages).
  • Project preferences (maximum of five pages).
  • Academic proofs, transcripts, and certificates.
  • Proof of special circumstances (if applicable) for part-time students (not exceeding 0.5 pages).

  • Institution Internal Deadline: The proposed institution’s deadline will appear on ResearchNet. Each institution has a different internal deadline. Candidates must follow this deadline.
  • Program Deadline: The program deadline is October 30, 2024. This deadline must be followed by the nominating institutions.
